A flood advisory has been issued for Hawaii Island until 4:30 p.m. Friday.
At 1:32 p.m., radar showed an area of heavy rain near Wood Valley in Ka’u, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters said the rain was moving southwest at 5 mph. Rainfall rates were estimated at one to two inches per hour.
Other locations including in the advisory are Pahala, Punaluu, Kawa Flats and Naalehu.
The advisory could be extended beyond 4:30 p.m. if the heavy rain persists, forecasters said.
The service cautions the public to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff may cause hazardous driving conditions because of reduced visibility, ponding and poor braking action.
